In South Korea, road lane markings often become invisible on rainy nights.
This is because the glass beads mixed into the lane marking paint wear off due to friction with tires.
Additionally, the vehicle headlights, taillights, streetlights, traffic signals, and neon signs cause reflections on the wet road surface, making the lane markings even harder to see.
As a solution, many countries around the world have adopted road stud installations.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport and the National Police Agency in Korea also recommend the installation of road studs in their guidelines.
However, the road studs currently available in Korea are prone to damage from external impacts such as snow removal work, and broken road studs can cause traffic accidents—thus, they are often not installed.
